Janice Propst

My work is characterized by layers of markings, lines and shapes interwoven in fields of blended color. Not purely abstract, my paintings can suggest landscapes with skies, the lines between them softly blurred. They can imply indigenous images. As an artist I have intentionally avoided politically oriented subject matter and literate interpretations. I have chosen to focus on nature. They are purposefully meditative and mean to be seen slowly, providing intense colors and patterns for the viewer to find a sense of place.

My recent landscape and field paintings are symbolic recreations meant to capture some of the sensation of natural landscapes.  Colors, patterns, textures, and shapes are layered on intense areas of watercolor, cut paper and found objects to divide images of earth and sky in the light at a captured moment in time.
