The Lakeshore Community Chorus will be presenting a spring concert titled “Road Trip: Adventures on Route 66,” Sunday, May 21st at 4:00. Nancy Plantinga, artistic director of the chorus, would like to invite Saugatuck-Douglas Art Club members to be part of this collaborative event. Original writings from local authors will be included at “rest areas” in between the concert selections. Classic cars from the 50’s and 60’s, owned by local residents and members of the Holland Car Club, will be displayed in the parking lot before the concert.

The Chorus hopes for approximately 12 artists to create visual representations of what travelers might experience on the old Route 66, such as landscapes, buildings, people in 50’s/60’s attire, cars, signs along the route, etc. Or artists might consider creating an artistic statement about how things have changed since the 50s and 60s. Each work will be displayed on an easel for your 2D artwork in the Saugatuck Center for the Arts lobby the day of the concert. The artwork must be large enough to grab the attention of concert attendees. Some SDAC members may have already done paintings similar to what you’d see on the old Route 66, such as rivers, mountains, farmland, and valleys. These could be included, although, we hope you’ll feel inspired by the program of music and concept to create something new! Your creation can be listed as "For Sale," however, we ask that you take care of the purchase at another time. If you are interested in selling your creation, you could leave your contact information on the easel. Nancy will go over these details with those that are interested in participating. Due to limited space and easels in the lobby, only 12 works of art can be included in this collaboration with LCC. The names of the artists displaying the work and a statement about the Saugatuck-Douglas Art Club will be in the written program.

Concert songs will include: Come Travel with Me (inspired by by Walt Whitman’s “Song of the Open Road”); Route 66; Sweet Home Chicago; Shenandoah; Kansas City; Oklahoma; On the Atchinson, Topeka and the Santa Fe; Grand Canyon Sunrise; Hooray for Hollywood; The Road Not Taken (based upon the text of Robert Frost); and From Sea to Shining Sea (America the Beautiful).  Put your thinking caps on…see if you can connect with one of these songs through art!  If interested in participating, please contact Nancy Plantinga, 616 405 3399 or [email protected]. Thanks for your consideration!

I am interested in participating in this event. Will create an illustration or painting that will lend itself to the event.
